Meet the 4th Grade Team

Julie Fowlkes

Mrs. Fowlkes has had the opportunity of teaching, learning and growing with kids most of her adult life.  She officially began her teaching career in 1997.  She has not only taught and experienced a variety of different grade levels during her teaching career, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade, but she has also been able to experience quite a diversity in socioeconomic schools within School district #25 as well.  These grade level and school changes have opened her eyes to the true magic of building relationships and the incredible resilience portrayed by children in some very disheartening hardships.  She has also seen the likenesses and differences that make us all incredibly blessed to learn from each other, and the overall importance that no matter the circumstances, age or place People Always Matter Most!  Mrs. Fowlkes is excited to be back at Gate City and can't wait to meet her new friends!  She really enjoys teaching 4th grade curriculum with Idaho History and math being some of her favorites.  Mrs. Fowlkes loves being with her family which includes her amazing grandkids!  She loves spending time at her family cabin where kayaking and ATV rides are some of her favorite activities.  She loves chocolate, BYU football, going for a jog and enjoying the beautiful outdoor.s

Piper KingPiper King

Mrs. King is an Idaho transplant and has been in Pocatello for 22 years. She was born in Texas while her parents were on summer break from teaching school in Alaska. She grew up in several small villages and towns in Alaska, and she moved to Idaho for college after graduating from high school.

While participating in a school tutoring program when she was in the fourth grade, Mrs. King realized she wanted to be a teacher. Watching the first grader she tutored experience success motivated her to want to do more. She loves being a part of her students' lives and enjoys watching them as they progress and expand their capabilities. She has enjoyed over 20 years of teaching at Gate City.

Her favorite hobbies are reading and spending time with her family, which includes two grandsons. She is also an avid sports fan!

Lacey Smart

Mrs. Smart has worked in education for over a decade.  She began as a sign language interpreter in 2007 in Blackfoot, ID.  After a transfer to the Pocatello School District in 2008, Mrs. Smart continued working with deaf and hard of hearing students for 4 more years before applying for a teaching position.  Her teaching history includes 6th grade in elementary and middle school math, 5th grade, and 4th grade.  She loves working and learning with children of all ages, but she is most inspired in elementary teaching.  Many people ask why she loves teaching, why does she keep coming back to her classroom day after day, year after year.  In response, "I love teaching because life is about learning.  We learn together, not only academics, but about relationships, communication, and life in general when we are united in a positive classroom culture."  When she's not teacher, Mrs. Smart enjoys spending time outside with her family hiking, camping, hunting, and reading books in the backyard hammock.
